CAPTAINS
2008/9
The club
captain is often recently retired with plenty
of time for regular internal club meetings, entertaining
visiting teams, organising club matches, arranging exchange
days and hosting the social functions that are the heartbeat
of the club.
As well as organisational skills and the ability to make
brief speeches, he has to possess diplomacy, patience
and integrity in the face of a regular volley of observation
from members about the way the club should be run.
The captain is responsible for the year's activities.
The captain gets a decent parking space, priority on the
first tee and the chance to play other courses free of
charge (as a courtesy during the year of office) but that
should not be the reason to do the job.
The captain's role is to serve the members in such a way
that the club moves forward and is always open to new
ideas, but at the same time respecting traditions that
are important in any golf club. He should endeavour to
enhance the reputation of the club and foster a friendly
atmosphere. A key function of the captain is to promote
a golf course which is a fair but a challenging test of
golf.
